Summer Sun Safety

Stay safe and healthy in the summer sun! Summer Sun Safety Month is a reminder to take care of yourself while enjoying the sun. While sunlight is important for vitamin D production, too much exposure can be harmful to your skin and eyes. Protect yourself from skin and eye diseases by taking precautions.

The strongest U.V. rays are between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so it's important to take measures to shield yourself during these hours. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an S.P.F. of 30 or higher, and remember to reapply every two hours (or every hour if swimming). Wear a wide-brimmed hat, long-sleeved shirt, and pants or skirts to cover your body. If needed, bring an umbrella for extra shade.

Don't forget about the health of your eyes! Sunglasses are a must-have in the summer. Not only do they protect your eyes from U.V. radiation, but they also shield the sensitive skin around your eyes and reduce the risk of cataracts and eye cancer. Look for sunglasses that block at least 99% of U.V.A. and U.V.B. rays.

Lastly, staying hydrated is crucial in the sun. Your body loses fluids quickly, so make sure to drink plenty of water. By following these tips, you can enjoy your summer with peace of mind.
