January is Cervical Health Awareness Month, a national observance dedicated to educating the public about cervical cancer prevention, early detection through Pap tests and HPV vaccines, and promoting regular well-women exams, highlighting that cervical cancer is highly preventable with timely screening and vaccination. Organizations like the National Cervical Cancer Coalition (NCCC) provide resources to raise awareness about risk factors (like HPV) and encourage screenings for women.

Key Actions & Information:

  • HPV Vaccination: Protects against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which causes nearly all cervical cancers. Recommended for ages 9-45, with earlier vaccination (11-12) requiring fewer doses.

  • Pap & HPV Tests: Screening starts at 21. Options for ages 30+ include Pap every 3 years, Pap + HPV every 5 years, or HPV alone every 5 years.

  • Regular Check-ups: Annual wellness exams facilitate discussions with healthcare providers about your risks and screening needs.

  • Who's at Risk? Anyone with a cervix can get cervical cancer, linked to HPV infection.

  • Early Detection Saves Lives: Cancer often has no symptoms early on, making screening vital to catch abnormal cells before they become cancerous.

  • Talk to your doctor: Schedule your screening and discuss HPV vaccination. National Glaucoma Awareness Month

Glaucoma affects millions of people around the world, yet many are unaware that they have the disease. This is often because glaucoma typically has no symptoms, and most individuals do not notice any vision loss until the disease has reached an advanced stage.

In the early stages, there are usually no warning signs of glaucoma. Over time, you may gradually lose your vision, starting with your peripheral (side) vision. Since this loss occurs slowly, you might not realize that your vision is changing at first. As the condition worsens, you may experience blurry vision or increasing vision loss.

The most effective way to determine whether you have glaucoma is to have a yearly eye exam, which can help detect vision changes and diseases like glaucoma.
