Men’s Health Month
June is Men’s Health Month—a time dedicated to raising awareness about preventable health issues and encouraging men and boys to take charge of their physical and mental well-being. It’s also a reminder that prioritizing health is not a luxury—it’s a necessity.
Studies continue to show that many men delay routine doctor visits, preventive screenings, and conversations about mental health. According to the CDC, men are often less likely to seek preventive care and more likely to ignore early warning signs of serious conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and certain cancers.
Common barriers often sound familiar:
“I don’t have time.”
“I feel fine.”
“I don’t like talking about it.”
But prevention matters. Many health concerns can be managed—or even prevented—through routine check-ups, early screenings, and adopting a healthy lifestyle.
Men’s Health Month focuses on simple but powerful steps:
Schedule your annual physical
Monitor blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar
Stay active and maintain a balanced diet
Prioritize mental health and talk openly about stress, anxiety, or depression
Keep up with recommended screenings like colonoscopies, prostate health discussions, skin checks, and diabetes screenings
Mental health matters, too. Many men struggle silently with stress, depression, or anxiety because of stigma or the belief that asking for help shows weakness. In reality, checking in, reaching out, and seeking support are signs of strength.
Helpful resources for learning more about men’s health and recommended screenings include the CDC Men’s Health Fast Facts, MedlinePlus Men’s Health Guide, and Johns Hopkins Men’s Health Month Tips.
At Northern Pharmacy & Medical Equipment, we encourage everyone to make preventive care a priority. Small steps today can lead to better health tomorrow—for yourself and for the people who count on you.
This June, take the first step: schedule the appointment, ask the question, and choose your health.
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (June 15)
Observed each year on June 15, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) shines a light on an issue that often goes unseen—elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation. This day raises awareness and encourages communities to protect older adults by promoting dignity, safety, and respect.
Elder abuse can take many forms, including:
Physical abuse
Emotional or psychological abuse
Financial exploitation
Neglect
Abandonment
Sexual abuse
Healthcare fraud or misuse
Sadly, many cases go unreported. Older adults may be hesitant to speak up, may rely on their caregiver, or may not recognize that they are being mistreated. Families, caregivers, healthcare providers, and community members all play an important role in recognizing warning signs and offering support.
Common warning signs may include:
Unexplained bruises or injuries
Sudden changes in finances or missing money
Poor hygiene or unsafe living conditions
Withdrawal from normal activities
Changes in mood, fearfulness, or depression
Missed medications or medical appointments
At Northern Pharmacy & Medical Equipment, we believe every senior deserves to feel safe, respected, and supported. Protecting our aging community starts with awareness, compassion, and action.
Helpful resources for victims, caregivers, and families include:
